Waverley Summer Fun Day

We held our fun day on Saturday 21st June and this year was our first time at Olive Lane. There was a great turnout in the sunshine (and rain towards the end!) and everyone looked like they had a fantastic time at the free event.

We enjoyed performances from Excel Martial Arts and Excel Dance as well as from Waverley Junior Academy and Jack’s Theatre School who both treated us to sneak peaks of their upcoming shows.

Barratt and David Wilson Homes kindly arranged for some characters to join us from ‘A Whole New World Entertainment’ which the children, as well as a few adults, loved!

The Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity brought along (a rather warm!) Doctor Ted to help raise funds and awareness of the charity’s Dementia Appeal.

Thank you to Specsavers and Hall Court Veterinary Group for providing the entertainers with space to get ready on the day.

Families took part in football penalty shootouts, crazy golf, giant games and some even had a go on the circus skills frame.

Local residents and small businesses took stalls to sell their goods and promote their services, and we had a choice of burgers, pizzas, iced coffees, and alcoholic drinks to keep us fed and watered during the day.

A big thank you to Harworth for allowing us to use Olive Lane this year, to all our stallholders and food/drink vendors who participated in the day, and to everyone who came along and helped to make it a success.

Planning is already underway for our 2026 event, and we will share more details in the next few months.

Waverley Junior Academy

After enjoying the sneak peak of ‘Frozen Jr’ at our Fun Day, we were delighted to be invited to watch the full show at Waverley Junior Academy with family and friends of the children.

We recognised familiar faces who took part in last year’s show, as well as some who were in the show for the first time. They all worked extremely hard over the last few months, and they looked like they enjoyed themselves on stage. Massive credit to Miss Hughes, the teacher at Waverley Junior Academy, who pulled everyone together, both on and off stage, to give the brilliant performance. Well done everyone!

Waverley Dash

This year’s 10k run, organised by Handsworth Roadhogs, will take place on Sunday 7th September around Waverley Lakes. Please see the website for further information and details on how to enter – https://handsworthroadhogs.uk/waverley-dash.html

Cycling

More local events are taking place over the summer as part of Cycling UK’s ‘Big Bike Revival’ see their website – https://www.cyclinguk.org/bigbikerevival.

Crank Monster are holding another session here in Waverley on 30th August and at Rother Valley on 16th & 17th August. Please see their website for more information – https://www.crankmonster.co.uk/bbr.

Community Hub

Work has started on the screeding of the Community Hub, which needs about a fortnight to dry off before the contractor goes back on site to do the rest of the fit-out work. We are looking for them to complete at the end of October, and then we can add in the furniture, which should lead to the Hub being open in November.

Orgreave Inquiry

The Waverley Community Council also welcomes the statutory public inquiry into the policing of picket lines during the Miners’ Strike, at the Orgreave coking plant in June 1984.

The WCC wrote to the then Home Secretary in 2023, supporting the call for justice. We are pleased to know that the voices of many, including Orgreave Truth & Justice Campaign, have led to the Inquiry.

Over the coming years, the Waverley development will be home to around 4,000 properties plus further commercial and retail development, so as Waverley grows, so can your business!
