What makes a summer sound to you? It will vary massively based on where you are, what you are doing and perhaps how the weather is behaving. I have picked some personal summer favourites which in one way or another have represented Summer whether in rain or shine.
The Who – My Generation (1965)
Their debut still sounds as fresh and crisp as a seaside breeze. Lots to love here, especially the
cheeky title track.
Spandau Ballet – True (1983)
A trip to Nassau was all they needed to discover their blue eyed soul. An underrated summer classic.
Kings X – Kings X (1992)
Overlooked grunge pioneers? Progressive songsmiths? This album can transport you either way.
John Waite – Rovers Return (1987)
He should be a national treasure. This album merges Rock n Roll with Rhythm and Blues and an
aftertaste of summer melancholy.
The Heavy Heavy – Life and Life Only (2023)
Echoes of Fleetwood Mac and The Mama’s & the Papas haunt this halcyon troupe currently making their own waves.
The Divine Comedy – Absent Friends (2004)
A slice of summer like a cherry Bakewell. This album is often overlooked in their canon, but
represents a stunning return to form.
Van Halen – Diver Down (1982)
An unfairly maligned album which is actually a lot of fun. Unpredictable covers alongside some of
Ed’s most memorable instrumentals.
Work Of Art – In Progress (2011)
Ear candy of the highest quality. They may be indebted to 1980’s LA, but this Scandinavian outfit literally turn AOR into an art form.
