The Many Colours of Goth

As the spooky season approaches, let’s celebrate the multicoloured patchwork of Gothic Rock. Not so much a style as a ‘mood’ and a rich and varied one, as I hope this playlist displays.

The Stooges -1969 (1969)

Iggy and the boys manage to deliver proto-punk merged with proto-post punk in this grungy ditty.

Bauhaus – Bela Lugosi’s Dead (1979)

A veritable Goth/Raga anthem, clocking in at just under 10 minutes.

The Cure – At Night (1980)

No list such as this could exist without The Cure. This nocturnal masterpiece is off the first of a trilogy of great albums from the early eighties.

Depeche Mode – Shake the disease (1986)

Hitherto content as a synth pop outfit, this is where DM took a darker turn which stood them in good stead for a very successful run through the 90’s and beyond.

Sisters of Mercy – Dominion/Mother Russia (1987)

Stalwarts of the second wave of Goth alongside The Mission and The Fields of the Nephilim.

The Cult – Love Removal Machine (1987)

Add a Les Paul plugged into a Marshall and enjoy the welcome addition of Hard Rock to the formula.

Nine Inch Nails – Head Like a Hole (1992)

Pioneers of the 90’s movement incorporating Industrial/EDM components.

Duran Duran – Danse Macabre (2023)

Goth you say? Well, kinda yeah. The Durans have re-emerged with a ‘Halloween-esque’ project which doesn’t fully emerge until October 27th. But it promises a blend of covers and originals with the two taster tracks containing a bit of what you’d expect and a bit of what you wouldn’t!
