Community Centre

The WCC is working hard behind the scenes to secure funding from the National Lottery for the community centre fit out. The application has been very detailed and lengthy, looking at the finances, lease conditions, the environmental impact and the ensuring it is accessible to all has been some of the requirements.

The National Lottery Community Fund panel date is 24 October, and we hope to find out if we have been successful before the end of the month. The assessment of the application will be considered alongside other organisations seeking grant funding. In this current economic climate, it’ll be a tough decision for them.

The WCC is also looking to place an invitation to tender shortly for the fit-out works, as well as finalise the online booking system. We have already had enquiries from Pilates teachers, Andy’s Man Club groups, kettlecise, children groups and fitness providers.

If you want to know how the build is coming along you can see pictures online, on the WCC’s dedicated page on its website – www.waverley-cc.gov.uk/community-centre-build

Naming the Community Centre

We are seeking your ideas on what to call the Community Centre. Obviously, Waverley Community Space, centre, hub etc might all work, but we are certain you have your own ideas, and we’d love to hear them. If you have more creative concepts, please enter our competition, with the winner’s concept to be used on the community centre building at Olive Lane.

Only one entry per person. All entries should be sent to the Clerk at clerk@waverley-cc.gov.uk before 18 October 2024, and a winner will be decided by the and announced on the website. Note that the WCC will have copyright over the final name and may choose to interpret the design as it sees fit. So let’s see what you’ve got!

GP service

The GP service, which will be located at Olive Lane and called Waverley Medical Centre (WMC), will be run, and managed by Gateway Primary Care. If you are not already registered with a GP service in the area you can register with the Canklow Road Surgery now. The registration form to join the surgery can be found here: https://www.canklowroadsurgery.nhs.uk/join-the-surgery

Please do ignore the location checker.

Residents who are already with another GP service, can opt to move to the WMC nearer the time of its opening in early 2025. The WCC will be sharing more information about the GP services nearer the time of its opening.

Join-in, start making friends!

It’s always good to hear about the groups that are active in and around Waverley for people to get involved in. We asked local groups to send us some information about themselves, which those below have done.

There are many benefits to joining various groups, including being good for your health, a bit of fresh air, and change of scenery and many more. Please get in touch with them if you wish to take part, or pass the information on if you know someone who may be interested.

Waverley Wasps Netball team

We formed just after Covid.  We are all ladies of varying ages who live on the estate that love playing netball and met only through this netball group. We don’t train but play matches on Wednesday (Sheffield league) and Thursday (Chesterfield league).  Games are £6.40 and is well worth it to have 40mins of a run around work out and a good laugh.  We are always welcome of new players, preferably with some netball experience to join as we then have a good pool of players to always make the 7 players needed for the games.

Anna captains the team and would be happy for anyone to get in contact if they would like more details.  We have a Waverley Wasps Netball Facebook page but otherwise my email is myaboland@gmail.com.

Waverley Community Litter Picking

Our Waverley Community litter-picking group meets monthly on every third weekend.  Future tidy-ups will therefore happen on both the Saturdays and the Sundays of:

19/20 October, 16/17 November and 21/22 December. Its your weekend, so chose the day you wish to volunteer! Our meeting point is at the Superbin/Community Garden at 10:30am. There are those of us that can’t get there for 10:30 – a later start can be accommodated by separate arrangement. All equipment will be provided. These events are a good opportunity to meet and chat with fellow residents whilst tidying up our local area(s).

We can stay together as a group and blitz a wider area without falling over each other and/or set off in different directions to cover a number of different routes. Rotherham Council’s LoveWhereYouLive team to pick bags of litter within a working day or two if left in

van-accessible places, plus a What3Words location with photo.

We have a community litter-pickers WhatsApp group to make comm’s easy and failsafe.

To join this group, your mobile number is all that is needed for an invitation – feel free to text 07305 943440 to express an interest in getting involved.
