In the heart of Waverley, where cricket intertwines with community, the Waverley Cricket Club has inscribed its name in the annals of Yorkshire’s cricketing history. As the sun sets on another riveting season, it’s time to raise a toast to a decade of dominance and the unyielding unity that defines our cherished club.
In recent years, our two formidable teams have been nothing short of exceptional, amassing a treasure trove of trophies that would make even the cricketing giants envious. Team 1, steered by the inspirational Vishnu Das, claimed the prestigious YDCL Division 1 title in 2023, leaving their competitors trailing a whopping 52 points behind. But that’s merely a slice of our success story. In 2022, they emerged as Division 2 runners-up and victors of the Percy Crookes Senior Cup. Rewind to 2021, and they celebrated dual triumphs as champions of YDCL Division 4 and victors of the Cliff Evans Junior Cup.
Meanwhile, Team 2, under the dynamic leadership of Hijas Veerasan and previous captain Shaaz has been equally awe-inspiring. In 2022, they clinched the Division 4 title and raised the Cliff Evans Junior Cup high. Their tenacity persisted into 2023, where they narrowly missed the Division 2 title but seized the Percy Crookes Senior Cup.
That’s a grand total of nine cups, including seven championship titles and two runners-up positions, a testament to the unwavering dedication and talent that course through the veins of our club.
But it’s not just about the trophies; it’s the unwavering support of the Waverley community that truly defines us. Our residents, whether under the sunny skies or amidst raindrops, have been our unwavering champions. We extend heartfelt gratitude to Wave Magazine for their invaluable sponsorship of match balls and Sheffield City Council for bestowing the Totley Sports Ground upon us, where dreams become reality every Saturday.
