The layout is OO Gauge, where 4mm on the model would equal 1 foot in real life, loosely set around 1970-1990. The track plan is fictional, but many hours were spent studying photos and creating detailed CAD models of the buildings which were then 3D printed.

Railway stock consists mainly of Yorkshire Engine Co. ‘Janus’ No.3 – one of a fleet of powerful locomotives built at Meadowhall in the 1960s specifically for United Coke and Chemicals Limited (the owners of the Orgreave site prior to British Steel), along with a Rolls Royce Sentinel (built in 1966). These models are available ‘off the shelf’ however required extensive repainting to represent the real locos that worked here.

Operationally, loaded coal trains were brought in from nearby Orgreave and Treeton collieries. The coal was tipped into underground hoppers then transferred to the coking ovens. The resultant coke was shipped out primarily to feed the blast furnaces at British Steel’s Scunthorpe works.

If anyone is interested in seeing the layout in the flesh, it is due to be exhibited at Harrogate Model Railway Exhibition on 26^th August, as well as Nottingham Model Railway Exhibition on the 16^th and 17^th November.

Hello, and welcome to issue 40 of Wave Magazine!

As the summer holidays start to unfold, we hope our readers are getting a chance to have some well earned downtime with friends and family, maybe even a bit of sunshine?!

As always there’s lots to update you on with new developments in and around Waverley, none more so than Olive Lane as more progress is made on the commercial side of this development and the announcement of the occupiers of the convenience store, which we have all been eagerly anticipating.

There’s also an update on the next phase of Highwall Park which is set to be ready for early next year, providing more green space on our doorstep, which will link in nicely to the bio-diversity programmes that are being championed by the community council and Waverley Buds.

Following our recent theme of ‘from the archives’ where we’ve been taking a step back in time looking at the Orgreave Coking Plant, we’ve got a great feature from a Waverley resident and model enthusiast who has built a scaled replica to represent the history of the site where we all now live. If you want to see this in the flesh it will be making an appearance at some exhibitions over the summer.

We also have some summer features for our regular film and music features, which I hope you all enjoy reading (and discovering something new) as much as I do.

In the 19th century, South Yorkshire was known for its collieries, which helped fuel the Industrial Revolution in Rotherham. Later, the Orgreave Coking Plant was built on the site we now live and work, which operated until 1990. The plant was infamous for its role in the miners’ strike of 1984, which saw violent clashes between miners and police.

A lot has changed since then!
