Hello, and welcome to issue 40 of Wave Magazine!

As the summer holidays start to unfold, we hope our readers are getting a chance to have some well earned downtime with friends and family, maybe even a bit of sunshine?!

As always there’s lots to update you on with new developments in and around Waverley, none more so than Olive Lane as more progress is made on the commercial side of this development and the announcement of the occupiers of the convenience store, which we have all been eagerly anticipating.

There’s also an update on the next phase of Highwall Park which is set to be ready for early next year, providing more green space on our doorstep, which will link in nicely to the bio-diversity programmes that are being championed by the community council and Waverley Buds.

Following our recent theme of ‘from the archives’ where we’ve been taking a step back in time looking at the Orgreave Coking Plant, we’ve got a great feature from a Waverley resident and model enthusiast who has built a scaled replica to represent the history of the site where we all now live. If you want to see this in the flesh it will be making an appearance at some exhibitions over the summer.

We also have some summer features for our regular film and music features, which I hope you all enjoy reading (and discovering something new) as much as I do.

Hello, and welcome to issue 39 of Wave Magazine!

We hope you all enjoyed the Waverley Fun Day! We’ve managed to hold off the print on this issue to include some photos from the day, and it’s great to see so many residents were able to attend and get involved.

Big thanks go to everyone who played a part in the organisation and delivery, holding community events like this is what makes Waverley such a great place to live and work and it’s great that we can have nice things like this right on our doorstep.

Check out the Waverley Community Council pages in this issue of Wave for their round up of the fun day, and details of all the other developments that are currently ongoing in Waverley.

You’ll also have noticed further developments on Olive Lane and Highwall Park, with groundwork now actively taking place. There’s more on these in the Harworth update as we eagerly anticipate completion over the coming months.

For the football fans amongst you, there’s an opportunity to design a new badge for Waverley Wanderers FC. What does Waverley mean to you? Is it a nod to the past, hope for the future? Get your ideas down and enter their competition – your design could end up on the shirts of all the teams from next season!

As residents will be aware, Harworth is moving forward with plans to develop Highwall Park – a new park which will run through Waverley and connect the Advanced Manufacturing Park and Olive Lane with the Waverley Lakes. 

This will be the main green space in the community, providing 20 acres of parkland for the community to meet, exercise, and spend time outdoors. 

Outline planning permission for the park and the supporting infrastructure including drainage has already been granted by Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council.  In March, we spoke with the community about our detailed plans and asked for their feedback. 

The consultation event on 14 March was well attended, with over 50 people there on the day.  It was great to hear residents’ views on what they would like to see in the new park, such as features to boost habitat creation. 

We were also delighted to meet with the pupils from Waverley Junior Academy to speak to them about the park.  This has given us some great ideas around the new play spaces and how these can best be created to suit the needs of the children at Waverley.

We’re taking this feedback on board as we finalise our plans.  We’ll be submitted our planning application in the coming weeks and a link to the council’s planning portal will be available on the wearewaverley.com website.

Earthworks will commence at Highwall Park from mid-April, and we will then be installing footpaths. These works are expected to take around four months to complete.  We will keep the community updated on progress.

…and continues at Olive Lane

We’re making great progress at Olive Lane – the new community hub at the heart of Waverley.

Construction is underway and we’re excited to have installed a timelapse camera of the site so that residents can keep up to date on the works.  A link to this can be found on the wearewaverley.com website.

Alongside new homes and the medical centre, Olive Lane will be home to commercial units which are currently being marketed to occupiers for uses such as cafés, restaurants, and small retail shops.  Waverley Community Council will also be creating a community centre in one of the units.

Our intention is for Olive Lane to be built by the end of this year, with the occupiers moving into the units early next year.

Council tax

We are aware that residents of Waverley have seen an uplift in their council tax which Waverley Community Council plans to use to fit-out the new community centre.

Harworth has a Section 106 agreement with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council – as part of the overall masterplan for Waverley – through which we are creating a building suitable for community uses. 

We will be doing so at Olive Lane and leasing this building, at a very low ‘peppercorn’ rent of £1 a year to the community council, for it to use as a community centre. 

As with the other commercial occupiers, the community council will need to manage the fit-out of the building according to their uses.  While we are aware the community council has chosen to do this through a council tax precept, Harworth has not been involved in this decision.

We are committed to creating a vibrant new area at Olive Lane and will continue to work closely with the community council over the coming months to support their planning for the community centre.

Harworth is moving forward with its plans to create a new local centre for Waverley, known as Olive Lane. 

This will be a brand new place for the community to come together and enjoy spaces such as cafés, restaurants and local shops.

It will be home to the new medical centre, and there will also be new outdoor seating and meeting areas, as well as a public square which can be used for pop-up shops, food stalls and events.  

Many residents attended the public exhibition on 30 May and shared their views on the proposals.  Harworth received many positive comments on the plans, and the majority of attendees were supportive of the scheme.

Harworth is now working to deliver Olive Lane as soon as possible.  In the last few weeks it has finalised the proposals to reflect feedback received and has now submitted its planning application to Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC).

The council will consider the application this summer and, if approved, the scheme will break ground later this year.  Residents will be pleased to hear that the intention is for Olive Lane, including the medical centre, to be open by the end of 2024.

Elsewhere in Waverley

Harworth is in the process of creating other community spaces at Waverley, including a bike track which will be open for use in late July.  The new park will also soon be complete – providing 20 acres of open, green space for residents to come together and spend time outside.   

Harworth is working collaboratively with Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council to deliver wider amenities, including highways and utilities works and the creation of more school places at Waverley.  The new Marriott hotel is due to be open by early next year at the latest.

As I sat down to write the intro to our June 2021 issue I had a look back at the corresponding issue from 2020 – which was our lockdown issue. Whilst only 12 months ago, it seems like a lifetime ago that we were talking about lockdown walks, the Waverley Heroes fundraising campaign and the Waverley Rainbows that popped up all around the development.

Fast forward again and we are out socialising, and able to see family and friends again in a less restrictive environment – something we have all missed and will never take for granted again.

As things start to open back up again, so do a lot of local businesses and community groups, many of which are features in Wave. Please do you bit to support local and help everyone rebuild and reconnect again!

In this issue we have some exciting news from our magazine sponsor, Harworth, on the development of a new hotel on land going down towards the Morrisons roundabout. In addition to the plans for Olive Lane, this will no doubt bring something different to Waverley that can be enjoyed by the community.

We also have news from Waverley Wanderers FC, who are raring to go again and on the lookout for players and coaches for their junior teams. If you have any budding footballers in the house, why not get them involved!
