Quick reminder – the Waverley Summer Fun Day is around the corner on Saturday 20^th June 12-3pm at Olive Lane. Its free to all, so why not pop by?

There will be lots of fun for all of the family including dancing, singing and martial arts performances from local groups and Waverley Junior Academy will be giving us a preview of their summer performance. Everyone can have fun at the circus skills or climbing wall.

Local residents and small businesses are hosting a variety of stalls. The businesses along Olive Lane are joining in too with some of them hosting special events. We will have our usual great pop-up food stalls and licensed bar, and the Waverley Community Hub will also be open.

Community Hub

You asked for more hours of opening, and we are pleased to say that we have a second part-time caretaker, so we can open longer and for more events at the weekend. Yes, we are expecting lots of bookings for baby showers and little ones’ birthdays.

We are also keen to set-up a coffee morning for those who’d like a little more company, everyone is welcome, and maybe you want to meet more people because you’re on maternity leave, or you’ve lost that special person in your life and are looking for a chat. Babies 1001 days

The other great piece of news is that we’ve been awarded grant funding towards Babies 1001 days, as part of the Rotherham Family Hub offering. We are sorting out the finer details of delivery but hope to get this up and running in the next few months, with a baby practitioner employed to deliver classes for families.

Waverley Lakes Park Run

Thanks to local resident Vinny, who originally suggested the idea to Harworth, 432 runners completed the inaugural Waverley Lakes Park Run on 18th April.

Waverley Community Council have been assisting Harworth and Vinny as well as Handsworth Roadhogs over the last year to bring the event to life.

The 5km course sees participants running twice around Waverley Lakes and takes place every Saturday at 9am.

The organisers welcome volunteers to help each week with event marshalling, barcode scanning and tail walking – so you can complete the event without running!

Dig & Chat at the Community Garden

The Waverley Councillors will be finding out if they have green fingers Sunday 5 July, around 10:30am at the Community Garden off Highfield Lane, alongside the Waverley Buds Garden Group. Please do join us for a weed, a dig or come along to say hello to us if you are out for a walk!

Road closure – Treeton Lane

Finally, if you use Treeton Lane, which is the road between Treeton and Catcliffe, parallel to the Catcliffe Flash, this will be closed over the summer period from 20 July to 28 August for Yorkshire Water to complete some major asset works. The footpath will remain open.

Over a year ago, Harworth Group attended a community meeting at Waverley giving residents an opportunity to share ideas and shape their neighbourhood. There, we met local resident Vinny. A quick chat about local roads soon turned into an exciting conversation about running. What began as a simple idea, quickly grew. Having previously worked with the local running group “Handsworth Hogs”, we linked up with them to create a positive working action group, each person taking on a role to get the parkrun to where we are today.  

A few bumps along the way didn’t deter them and now we are proud to offer Waverley and the wider community a weekly parkrun, offering a fun and free running club catering for all abilities.  

This is Placemaking in action. A collaborative, community-driven process that reimagines and shapes public spaces to maximize shared value, fostering healthier, more social, and sustainable communities. Parkrun offers communities a sense of ownership through community led “hands off” activities, promoting social cohesion, improving physical and mental wellbeing and enhancing community spirit.  

The inaugural event saw a massive 432 runners taking part in the run around the beautiful lakes. It was a great turnout and the busiest first parkrun in Yorkshire since 2019! 

Parkrun cannot run without the help of volunteers and are always grateful for any help. You don’t have to be a parkrun expert or have any experience, you will just need a barcode which can be set up easily by visiting the parkrun website.

Whilst there have been some delays to the project, and we would like to sincerely thank you all for your patience and continued support. We hope you and your families will make great use of the new space and enjoy spending time there.

The new play area has been designed with a natural feel, using natural materials and extensive planting to create a welcoming, green environment that blends beautifully with the surrounding landscape. We still have some minor works to do on the immediate area but will communicate this ahead of time. 

Why is it called Highwall Park?

Work is already well underway on Phases Two and Three, which will deliver extensive new public open space, a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), and a wetland area.
We look forward to seeing the park come to life as a fantastic new community asset for Waverley.

Option to Pay for Parking at Olive Lane Car Parks

There are two adequately sized car parks now in use at Olive Lane. Both can be accessed off Stephenson Way. The main Olive Lane car park entrance sits behind the medical centre and is signposted. The overflow car park is situated at the bottom of Stephenson Way and is clearly signposted.

Both car parks offer visitors 2.5 hours of free parking with the option to pay for extra time should you require it. The tariffs are clearly signposted, and we urge all visitors to read the terms carefully prior to leaving their vehicle. Payment is via the Ringo App. These changes went live on Tuesday 12th May 2026.

Please note, any vehicles that are parked in the following areas will receive a ticket:

• Disabled bays with no blue badge in view
• EV charging spaces when not using the charger
• Loading Bays
• Spaces clearly marked as no parking areas

As a reminder, parking is also enforced on part of Stephenson Way where no parking is permitted at any given time in the designated areas which are signposted.

Please be aware of this when visiting.

OBSESSION

The tiny horror film that somehow became one of the year’s biggest success stories. Word-of-mouth has transformed this from a small curiosity into a genuine cultural event. Horror continues to thrive because audiences want experiences that feel unpredictable and communal again and this apparently delivers both. Expect tense atmospheres, deeply uncomfortable moments and probably at least one scene that social media won’t stop talking about for weeks. 

THE BACKROOMS

One of the strangest film concepts to become mainstream in years. Based on the viral internet horror phenomenon involving endless yellow office corridors and the creeping sense that reality itself has broken, this feels like the perfect example of how online culture is beginning to shape cinema itself. The idea sounds faintly ridiculous until you see even a single image from it and immediately feel uncomfortable. Internet horror continues to have a moment. 

GODZILLA MINUS ZERO

The previous film, GODZILLA MINUS ONE,  quietly became one of the best blockbuster films of recent years by remembering that giant monster films work much better when the human characters are actually interesting. Alongside the extraordinary destruction sequences was a surprisingly emotional story about guilt, trauma and survival in post-war Japan. Expect this follow-up to be absolutely enormous in every sense of the word. 

DISCLOSURE DAY

Steven Spielberg making a UFO conspiracy thriller in 2026 feels oddly comforting and also perfectly confusing: early details suggest something darker and stranger than CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, with paranoia and secrecy replacing wonder. Spielberg remains one of the few directors capable of turning people simply standing in a room looking frightened into genuinely gripping cinema. 

DIGGER

Alejandro G. Iñárritu directing Tom Cruise is an enticing prospect in part, because nobody seems entirely certain what the plot actually is yet, but this only makes it even more exciting. Modern blockbuster cinema often feels painfully over-explained before release, so the mystery surrounding this is refreshing. 

THE END OF OAK STREET

Perhaps the most intriguingly odd film on this entire list. Directed by David Robert Mitchell, responsible for IT FOLLOWS, this appears to involve suburban America, mysterious events and dinosaurs. Yes, dinosaurs. The early imagery feels somewhere between Steven Spielberg and a fever dream discovered on Reddit at three in the morning. Which, honestly, is a compliment.

THE ODYSSEY

Christopher Nolan tackling Homer’s epic poem was inevitable really. The man has spent years making films about time, obsession, sacrifice and men staring intensely at large practical effects, so ancient mythology feels like a natural next step. Expect colossal visuals, thunderously loud music and at least one sequence that will make audiences immediately book IMAX tickets. 

DUNE: MESSIAH

The previous DUNE films somehow managed to make giant spaceships landing in sand feel like the most important thing humanity had ever witnessed. Denis Villeneuve’s latest adaptation of the Dune books moves the story into much stranger and darker territory, focusing less on revolution and more on power, religion and consequence. Also: more giant sandworms. 

AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY

Marvel films no longer completely dominate culture in the way they once did, but bringing Robert Downey Jr back as Doctor Doom is such an absurdly enormous swing that curiosity alone will probably make this one of the year’s biggest films. Whether it turns out to be brilliant or an expensive catastrophe, everyone will have an opinion on by the Monday after release. 

SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY

There is now an entire generation for whom Spider-Man films simply arriving every few years feels like a law of nature. Thankfully, the character still works because these films usually remember something important: Spider-Man is at his best when he’s awkward, overwhelmed and trying to balance ordinary life with world-ending chaos. 

THE HUNGER GAMES: SUNRISE ON THE REAPING

Hollywood’s current obsession with revisiting successful franchises continues here, but at least THE HUNGER GAMES series has always had more substance than most blockbuster franchises. The original films balanced spectacle with political commentary surprisingly well and the return to Panem feels timed perfectly given the renewed popularity of dystopian fiction. Also, this cast is stacked full of contemporary talent that are perfectly aligned with the cast of the original film. 

TOY STORY 5

The emotional manipulation continues. Somehow, against all logic, Pixar keeps managing to make audiences deeply emotionally attached to bits of plastic. There’s every chance this won’t reach the heights of the earlier films, but people said that before TOY STORY 3 as well and many of us still haven’t emotionally recovered from that ending. 

MINIONS & MONSTERS

Pure chaos. Bright colours, loud noises, slapstick comedy and small yellow creatures speaking a language that sounds like somebody accidentally sat on a remote control. Yet somehow these films remain weirdly charming. More importantly, they reliably keep children entertained for ninety minutes, which for many parents may be the single most important cinematic achievement of all.

So here we are in the penultimate edition of ‘albums released in my lifetime in a year ending with a zero’. I’m sure there’s a catchier title out there, but hey. 2010 was an interesting year and the albums chosen contain two by acts nearing the end of their peak and two by bands emerging and stamping their mark on the music world. Enjoy.

McFly – Above The Noise

A sonic departure for sure. Enlisting producers Dallas Austin and Taio Cruz abandoned the raw pop/punk sound they were best known for and replacing it with a slick 80s sound that allowed them to compete with their contemporaries. It paid off though and songs like ‘Shine a light’ were embraced by their fan base as well as new audiences.

Field Music – Measure

The Brewis brothers from Sunderland to this day remain a well-kept secret, but those in the know couldn’t even predict this sprawling masterpiece. Chamber pop, classic rock and progressive with a small p. Like ‘The White Album’ without being in any sense derivative,  from the concise ‘Them that do nothing’ to the analog disco of ‘Let’s write a book’. Music for thinkers. AND dancers.

Snarky Puppy – Tell Your Friends

Jazz-Fusion was all but dead in the water by 2010, even now, one could be excused for never even hearing this genre even by accident. Enter Snarky Puppy: a Texan jazz collective that gained traction as they crept across to New York, Manchester and into the clubs of Europe in their mini-van. Now they’ve picked up some Grammys and gained the admiration of their heroes, you should check this album out and…Tell Your Friends.

Ozzy Osbourne – Scream

After the storming ‘Black Rain’ Ozzy was showing no sign of flagging and no shortage of confidence either, even to the point of replacing longtime guitarist Zakk Wylde with the unknown but nonetheless explosive Gus G. Once again produced by Kevin Churko, this is an album that doesn’t miss a beat and delivers as consistently as one of his classics. He’s a self-deprecating contradiction is Ozzy, but an astonishing artist with one of the best voices in hard rock, even at his last gig at Villa Park.

Okay, Boston Castle is no National Trust property, but the views across our region are well worth writing home about. Combine that with the stark and stony beauty of Moorgate Cemetery and you have two places in which to repose and reflect, far from the hubbub of the town centre.

Offering prestigious Russell Group-accredited apprenticeships, the centre supports learners across advanced, higher, and degree-level programmes — including Levels 3, 4, and 6.With two intakes each year and strong links to hundreds of local and national employers, the AMRC Training Centre is a springboard for anyone interested in building a career in design, manufacturing, or maintenance engineering.

Rebecca Blackburn, Head of business development, engagement and contracts, explains: “Engineering is a national priority, and hobbies and hands-on interests often play a vital role in shaping exciting, long-term careers in the field. We’re passionate about supporting local students and want to connect with more schools, families, and businesses across the Waverley community.”

With four open events every year, the AMRC is always looking for enthusiastic new apprentices, and they’re keen to hear from local schools who want to explore the pathways available.

But their impact isn’t just within industry. The team regularly supports community-led initiatives, from hosting family-friendly STEM days to partnering with charities like Sheffield  Children’s Hospital, where apprentices recently helped redesign its iconic snowflake decorations.

As Rebecca adds, “We’re proud to be based in Waverley and want to work closely with residents and local organisations to inspire the next generation of engineers. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, student, or business owner, there are so many ways to get involved.”

THE BAD GUYS – available to buy now

So the first film is Bad Guys. I like it because it’s positive and lovely. There are lots of different characters-there’s a news reporter, there is a wolf and some other bad guys like a snake and shark, piranha and webs the spider. There’s also another bad guy who isn’t in their team but she actually turns into the Governor of the city who helps the Bad Guys do a heist but do a good thing. That’s because it’s about criminals who try to do good even though they’re bad guys in the first place. My favorite bit is I think when the police Chief starts to wiggle her hips in the dancing scene. It’s really funny and I can’t wait to see Bad Guys 2 in the cinema soon.

DESPICABLE ME – Amazon Prime

So the next film that I would recommend is Despicable Me. It is about a person called Gru who becomes a supervillain and he has some alien like friends that are called Minions and you know what the minions love? Bananas-they cannot get enough of them! I haven’t seen all the Despicable Me films but I’ve seen most of them but I think I would just recommend all of the Despicable Me films because I just like the cheekiness and all of the excitement in them and also a bit of the drama as well. 

For families

WICKED – available to buy now

So the third film is going to be Wicked.  I don’t think it would be appropriate for every child but it’s really good. So it’s a baby who whose born green called Elphaba and then when they go to big school they meet someone called Glinda. Glinda is very posh and popular but Elphaba isn’t but is very powerful. My favourite thing about Wicked is probably the love and humour and hope and the “go go go” part of it. My favorite song in it is Defying Gravity. Oh yeah and my Daddy’s favorite bit is when Glinda tries to turn Elphaba’s outfit into a ball gown, it’s funny as she shouts “ballgown”!

FANTASTIC FOUR – in cinemas now

The latest in the MCU features a gorgeous retro-futuristic style that seems to be set in the 1950s/60s but also possibly in the future. The film spends little time on exposition and instead jumps into the huge action set-pieces that don’t rely on other Marvel films to make sense. The family-orientated focus is an interesting take on the genre and the changes that one character goes through is handled with a maturity often lacking in superhero films. Crucially though, the film is just a lot of fun and, for those invested in Marvel, seemingly sets up a couple of quite significant ‘things’…

For adults/parents

SINNERS – available to buy now

At least one local resident hated this, however, we can ignore their opinion (sorry!), as the film is a magnificent piece of work that should be seen on as large a screen as you can. Going in “cold” to this is best: the marketing reveals too much, but the constant twists and turns means that even if you do know what the general plot is here, there’s still plenty to enjoy. The brief overview is that director Ryan Coogler (responsible for BLACK PANTHER, CREED and FRUITVALE STATION) wrote, directed and produced this original story about a pair of brothers in 1930s America who return to Memphis to set up a club after spending time with different gangs in America. Both roles are played, using actual film magic, by the always-brilliant Michael B Jordan and are accompanied by a stellar ensemble cast, including plenty of recognisable faces. There are at least 3 scenes that stand out as being some of the most original and attention-grabbing in recent years, and alongside some spectacular cinematography and bewitching music, this is one of the best of the year.

MIAMI VICE – iPlayer

This isn’t what you think it will be. Yes, it’s based on the TV show, famous for its glamourous portrayal of the crime-ridden Miami of the 1980s. But, this is directed by Michael Mann of HEAT, COLLATERAL, ALI, LAST OF THE MOHICANS and THIEF fame. This means you get epic scale rendered in incredible wide-shots, thunderously loud action scenes, huge close-ups and lots of guns and windscreens. Watch the first 15 minutes, relax into the pace and style and enjoy a vastly underrated action-crime-thriller gem.

For grandparents

OPPENHEIMER – Netflix

One of the most-talked about, awarded and financially successful films of the last 5 years has arrived on streaming, somewhat quietly, on Netflix. If you missed all of the excitement upon release, Christopher Nolan’s biopic of “father of the atomic bomb J. Robert Oppenheimer” is a spectacular, hugely ambitious and moving portrayal of the development of the atomic bomb and subsequent impact on the world. This isn’t a standard biopic though: it’s told through a complex and riveting narrative structure that absolutely captivates, enthralls and terrifies in equal measure. A masterpiece of modern filmmaking.

CONCLAVE – Amazon Prime

This was released on Amazon Prime as the real-life conclave to elect a new Pope took place, and whilst it probably doesn’t reflect the real-life machinations that take place behind closed-doors at the Vatican, this is an excellent watch and is as intriguing as it is beautiful. A hugely recommended film for fans of classic filmmaking: dialogue heavy, interesting visually and full of mature and interesting themes.
