So here we are in the penultimate edition of ‘albums released in my lifetime in a year ending with a zero’. I’m sure there’s a catchier title out there, but hey. 2010 was an interesting year and the albums chosen contain two by acts nearing the end of their peak and two by bands emerging and stamping their mark on the music world. Enjoy.

McFly – Above The Noise

A sonic departure for sure. Enlisting producers Dallas Austin and Taio Cruz abandoned the raw pop/punk sound they were best known for and replacing it with a slick 80s sound that allowed them to compete with their contemporaries. It paid off though and songs like ‘Shine a light’ were embraced by their fan base as well as new audiences.

Field Music – Measure

The Brewis brothers from Sunderland to this day remain a well-kept secret, but those in the know couldn’t even predict this sprawling masterpiece. Chamber pop, classic rock and progressive with a small p. Like ‘The White Album’ without being in any sense derivative,  from the concise ‘Them that do nothing’ to the analog disco of ‘Let’s write a book’. Music for thinkers. AND dancers.

Snarky Puppy – Tell Your Friends

Jazz-Fusion was all but dead in the water by 2010, even now, one could be excused for never even hearing this genre even by accident. Enter Snarky Puppy: a Texan jazz collective that gained traction as they crept across to New York, Manchester and into the clubs of Europe in their mini-van. Now they’ve picked up some Grammys and gained the admiration of their heroes, you should check this album out and…Tell Your Friends.

Ozzy Osbourne – Scream

After the storming ‘Black Rain’ Ozzy was showing no sign of flagging and no shortage of confidence either, even to the point of replacing longtime guitarist Zakk Wylde with the unknown but nonetheless explosive Gus G. Once again produced by Kevin Churko, this is an album that doesn’t miss a beat and delivers as consistently as one of his classics. He’s a self-deprecating contradiction is Ozzy, but an astonishing artist with one of the best voices in hard rock, even at his last gig at Villa Park.

Offering prestigious Russell Group-accredited apprenticeships, the centre supports learners across advanced, higher, and degree-level programmes — including Levels 3, 4, and 6.With two intakes each year and strong links to hundreds of local and national employers, the AMRC Training Centre is a springboard for anyone interested in building a career in design, manufacturing, or maintenance engineering.

Rebecca Blackburn, Head of business development, engagement and contracts, explains: “Engineering is a national priority, and hobbies and hands-on interests often play a vital role in shaping exciting, long-term careers in the field. We’re passionate about supporting local students and want to connect with more schools, families, and businesses across the Waverley community.”

With four open events every year, the AMRC is always looking for enthusiastic new apprentices, and they’re keen to hear from local schools who want to explore the pathways available.

But their impact isn’t just within industry. The team regularly supports community-led initiatives, from hosting family-friendly STEM days to partnering with charities like Sheffield  Children’s Hospital, where apprentices recently helped redesign its iconic snowflake decorations.

As Rebecca adds, “We’re proud to be based in Waverley and want to work closely with residents and local organisations to inspire the next generation of engineers. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, student, or business owner, there are so many ways to get involved.”

THE BAD GUYS – available to buy now

So the first film is Bad Guys. I like it because it’s positive and lovely. There are lots of different characters-there’s a news reporter, there is a wolf and some other bad guys like a snake and shark, piranha and webs the spider. There’s also another bad guy who isn’t in their team but she actually turns into the Governor of the city who helps the Bad Guys do a heist but do a good thing. That’s because it’s about criminals who try to do good even though they’re bad guys in the first place. My favorite bit is I think when the police Chief starts to wiggle her hips in the dancing scene. It’s really funny and I can’t wait to see Bad Guys 2 in the cinema soon.

DESPICABLE ME – Amazon Prime

So the next film that I would recommend is Despicable Me. It is about a person called Gru who becomes a supervillain and he has some alien like friends that are called Minions and you know what the minions love? Bananas-they cannot get enough of them! I haven’t seen all the Despicable Me films but I’ve seen most of them but I think I would just recommend all of the Despicable Me films because I just like the cheekiness and all of the excitement in them and also a bit of the drama as well. 

For families

WICKED – available to buy now

So the third film is going to be Wicked.  I don’t think it would be appropriate for every child but it’s really good. So it’s a baby who whose born green called Elphaba and then when they go to big school they meet someone called Glinda. Glinda is very posh and popular but Elphaba isn’t but is very powerful. My favourite thing about Wicked is probably the love and humour and hope and the “go go go” part of it. My favorite song in it is Defying Gravity. Oh yeah and my Daddy’s favorite bit is when Glinda tries to turn Elphaba’s outfit into a ball gown, it’s funny as she shouts “ballgown”!

FANTASTIC FOUR – in cinemas now

The latest in the MCU features a gorgeous retro-futuristic style that seems to be set in the 1950s/60s but also possibly in the future. The film spends little time on exposition and instead jumps into the huge action set-pieces that don’t rely on other Marvel films to make sense. The family-orientated focus is an interesting take on the genre and the changes that one character goes through is handled with a maturity often lacking in superhero films. Crucially though, the film is just a lot of fun and, for those invested in Marvel, seemingly sets up a couple of quite significant ‘things’…

For adults/parents

SINNERS – available to buy now

At least one local resident hated this, however, we can ignore their opinion (sorry!), as the film is a magnificent piece of work that should be seen on as large a screen as you can. Going in “cold” to this is best: the marketing reveals too much, but the constant twists and turns means that even if you do know what the general plot is here, there’s still plenty to enjoy. The brief overview is that director Ryan Coogler (responsible for BLACK PANTHER, CREED and FRUITVALE STATION) wrote, directed and produced this original story about a pair of brothers in 1930s America who return to Memphis to set up a club after spending time with different gangs in America. Both roles are played, using actual film magic, by the always-brilliant Michael B Jordan and are accompanied by a stellar ensemble cast, including plenty of recognisable faces. There are at least 3 scenes that stand out as being some of the most original and attention-grabbing in recent years, and alongside some spectacular cinematography and bewitching music, this is one of the best of the year.

MIAMI VICE – iPlayer

This isn’t what you think it will be. Yes, it’s based on the TV show, famous for its glamourous portrayal of the crime-ridden Miami of the 1980s. But, this is directed by Michael Mann of HEAT, COLLATERAL, ALI, LAST OF THE MOHICANS and THIEF fame. This means you get epic scale rendered in incredible wide-shots, thunderously loud action scenes, huge close-ups and lots of guns and windscreens. Watch the first 15 minutes, relax into the pace and style and enjoy a vastly underrated action-crime-thriller gem.

For grandparents

OPPENHEIMER – Netflix

One of the most-talked about, awarded and financially successful films of the last 5 years has arrived on streaming, somewhat quietly, on Netflix. If you missed all of the excitement upon release, Christopher Nolan’s biopic of “father of the atomic bomb J. Robert Oppenheimer” is a spectacular, hugely ambitious and moving portrayal of the development of the atomic bomb and subsequent impact on the world. This isn’t a standard biopic though: it’s told through a complex and riveting narrative structure that absolutely captivates, enthralls and terrifies in equal measure. A masterpiece of modern filmmaking.

CONCLAVE – Amazon Prime

This was released on Amazon Prime as the real-life conclave to elect a new Pope took place, and whilst it probably doesn’t reflect the real-life machinations that take place behind closed-doors at the Vatican, this is an excellent watch and is as intriguing as it is beautiful. A hugely recommended film for fans of classic filmmaking: dialogue heavy, interesting visually and full of mature and interesting themes.

• Karobar, an Indian restaurant, is planning to open its doors in August.
• Little Olives Day Nursery is working towards an August opening.

Having these spaces in a central, walkable location is enabling the community to come together and socialise and is part of the creation of a vibrant and sustainable neighbourhood at Waverley.

Progress at Highwall Park, Waverly

Works are progressing at Highwall Park, our new 20-acre green space.  Alongside trees, foliage, ponds and lakes which have been designed to attract local wildlife, the park will have footpaths for walking, running and cycling, picnic areas, and dedicated sports and play spaces. 

We want to remind those living and working at Waverley that the land is a construction site with machinery being operated and an excavation taking place.  For the safety of the community, the land is not currently accessible.  Please do not attempt to enter the site and remind all children not to play in or near this area during the summer holidays.

Highwall Park will be developed in three phases, and the intention is for the first to open later this year.  For example, read about Olive Lane Car Park and Overflow Car Park in the early months of 2026!

We look forward to seeing the community enjoying the park.

Hello, and welcome to the August 2025 issue

Welcome back to your local news outlet, with a new eco-friendly production! We’re proud to share that Wave is now a carbon balanced print publication, thanks to our fantastic printers at Northend. You’ll now see a Carbon Balanced Print icon in every issue – a small but meaningful step as we continue to grow Wave as a community with the environment in mind.

It’s been a summer packed with events, with Olive Lane coming into its own as a great space for social gatherings. From live shows and market stalls to children’s activities and outdoor dining, it’s been brilliant to see so many residents making use of these new communal areas. And there’s plenty more to come! Don’t forget to check out the local community council and Harworth updates in this issue for details on what’s coming up locally, plus events from other brilliant community groups nearby.

We’ve got a special guest in our film reviews section this month – 6-year-old Waverley resident Eponine, who’s sharing her thoughts on some family favourites! Nicola’s journey into mental health care was shaped by personal challenges. She witnessed the effects of mental illness within her family and experienced her own struggles—including physical health issues in her twenties and a PTSD diagnosis in her thirties. A turning point came when she sought trauma therapy, which inspired her transition from social care work into business ownership.

“Having supported family and experienced mental health issues myself, I saw a clear need for more tailored support in the community,” Nicola explained.

Gemma and Nicola previously worked together as Support Workers and shared a passion for building meaningful relationships with clients. “What matters most is getting to know people and helping them work toward their version of a better life,” said Nicola. “We’ve both been there—our lived experience drives us to support people with empathy and understanding.”

The pair believe what sets Positive Steps apart is their ability to offer authentic, person-centred care. This isn’t just a job—it’s a heartfelt commitment to making a difference.

To help remind which film is which, each title comes with a sub-title, starting from the best, down to the not-so-great at all.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE FALLOUT (M:I6)

AKA: the one where Henry Cavill reloads his arms and Cruise breaks his ankle for real but carries on filming.

The sixth in the series is the best. It nails the formulaic expectations of the series, alongside shocks and twists. The plot is tight and clear, the set-pieces frequent and constantly thrilling and the stakes are cleverly framed, given that they’re personal to our protagonist Ethan Hunt, and the world-at-large. It also features the best Cruise running scene, the best bike chase (a staple for the series) and probably the best fight scenes. Should’ve won some Oscars.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ROGUE NATION (M:I5)

AKA: the one where he hung off the side of an airplane in a suit.

If FALLOUT is the best of the series, ROGUE NATION is the film where the formula for the series is so well developed that the whole film feels confident and bold. The opening scene of Ethan Hunt holding onto the side of a cargo plane as it takes off, not immediately cutting away to show that Cruise genuinely was on the side of an actual airplane taking off, demonstrates how the rest of the film will be-ambitious, thrilling and constantly pushing the envelope. It introduces new, memorable characters in exciting ways and plays with audience reactions from first frame until the last.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE (M:I1)

AKA: the one with the wire stunt that started it all.

Watching this now is such a different experience to the recent films. It’s also nearly 30 years old and made when spy/espionage films were much smaller in scope. Directed by storied director Brian DePalma, known for his artistic approach to visual storytelling, it also looks very different to many of the films in the series. Some of the technology used means that watching now makes the film feel a bit strange, but the overall narrative is paced masterfully and with a constant stream of twists and turns means that you have to be dutifully watching (no two-screening here please!) for the final explanation to not only make sense but have the emotional impact that the film deserves.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE DEAD RECKONING/FINAL RECKONING (M:I7 and M:I8)

AKA the one where he jumped off a mountain on a bike and AKA the one currently in cinemas that might end it all.

In time, these two will be further down in the list, or at least FINAL RECKONING will be, but fresh off of seeing the latest film, recency bias influences the placing here. It’s important to know that these two films, over 5 hours in total, were conceived as one long film, so as you watch the latest you’ll see why there are so many call-backs to the “first part”. But the second is just too long-the first part of the film is just exposition and it doesn’t really start until 25 minutes in. But there’s much to enjoy after-the submarine sequence was an extraordinary experience in the local IMAX screen. Part 1, called DEAD RECKONING, is the better of the 2 films though. Much pacier, more thrilling and with some incredible stunts, it’s just a shame that the marketing of the film showed so much of what was to come.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE GHOST PROTOCOL (M:I4)

AKA: the one with the Burj Khalifa.

This is why putting this list together is so tough: this is a brilliant action film. The scene on/in/outside of, of the Burj Khalifa is legendary. Plus, there’s so more to enjoy, highlights being a stealthy robbery in Saint Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow using a portable hologram and a scene in Mumbai that has echoes of the first M:I film. Just don’t expect as many memorable scenes or characters compared to other films in the franchise.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 3

AKA: the one with the best villain.

It feels harsh putting this one here, as it’s great fun. It’s a real bridge between the absurd nonsense that M:I2 is, and the template-setting MI:4, but it’s still just not as engaging as say, 4, or 5. The set-pieces are huge (base-jumping in Shanghai, an absurd fight with jets  on a bridge), and probably has the second-best running scene in the whole franchise (the near-uninterrupted take of Cruise running for a couple of minutes whilst screaming in Cantonese is excellent), but the real highlight is the villain, played by the much-missed, and prodigiously talented, Philip Seymour Hoffman. He’s menacing and malevolent, charismatic and magnetic. Most franchises would kill for a film this good-in this franchise it’s one of the weaker ones.

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2

AKA: the one that no one likes.

We’ll just get this out of the way here: it’s fine. As an action film, as a John Woo film, it’s fine. It’s just not shot in the way that the rest of the films are, and it just feels really generic as a result. Some of the narrative beats are pretty typical for the genre, but it feels much more of a John Woo film than it does a M:I film. Opening with a Limp Bizkit song, rock climbing and exploding sunglasses is pretty great though.

Ian Moreno-Melgar has authored film text books and consults on film education to the British Film Institute. Just not on MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE films though, which is probably why he was not invited to the recent Tom Cruise Q&A unfortunately.
