The Musologist – 4 from 1990

Alright!…10 years on and…oh no! We missed out the 80’s altogether. That’s another whole

chapter we’ll have to revisit. Meanwhile, let snoop through some choice selections from the year that was: 1990.

Kings X – Faith, Hope, Love

By 1990, most Hard Rock had crusted over into a reassuring extension of the 80’s. Few bands gave a hint of what was to come in the 1990’s. Enter Kings X, a 3 man Powerhouse from Texas that have been compared alongside everything from Proto-Grunge to Prog, but were neither. Hendrix meets Zep meets The Beatles? You decide.

The La’s – The LA’s

The North of England had spawned many alternative guitar bands on Independent labels by

1990. This late arrival from Liverpool was one of the most important, yet oft overlooked. Aside from the clear pearl in the shell that is ‘There She Goes’, there’s a lot more to discover in this raw beauty.

Madonna – The Immaculate Collection

Okay, okay…it’s a compilation!! But this is also a 1 stop shop for Madonna’s first era. The range and magnitude of everything she achieved between 1983 and 1990 is here. Her story still rolls on, but it’s important to remember the significance of what Ms Ciccone initially produced on just one triumphant disc.

Public Enemy – Fear of a Black Planet

There’s a lot of great Hip-Hop to discover between 1979 and 2009, but none as seismic as this. A significant document of Rap as well as a notable tablet of Black History. If the rhymes don’t defeat you, the grooves and samples will. With Chuck D at the helm as ever, this remains a sobering reminder of what life in 1990s America was like.
